Jesus brings healing and hope

Today’s Gospel Reflection: Keep Your Lamp Burning

Matthew 25:1–13

Jesus gives us the powerful parable of the ten virgins—five wise and five foolish. All ten were waiting for the bridegroom. All had lamps. All became tired and fell asleep. But when the bridegroom finally arrived at midnight, only five were ready.

The difference was simple: the wise virgins had brought enough oil.

This Gospel is not simply about waiting for Jesus. It is about how we live while we wait.

🕯️ Is Your Lamp Still Burning?

Every Christian has a lamp that God has entrusted to them—the gift of faith, hope, love, prayer, and grace.

But a lamp cannot shine without oil.

Our spiritual lives also need to be continually nourished. Prayer, God’s Word, the Sacraments, repentance, charity, forgiveness, and faithful living help keep the flame of faith alive.

It is possible to look like we have a lamp while having very little oil.

We can go to church but lose our relationship with God.
We can know Bible verses but fail to live them.
We can call ourselves Christians but allow bitterness, hatred, pride, or sin to extinguish our spiritual fire.

Jesus is asking us today: Is your lamp burning?

⏳ Do Not Wait Until It Is Too Late

The bridegroom was delayed, and the virgins became tired and slept. This is important because Jesus does not condemn them simply for becoming tired.

The crisis came when the bridegroom arrived and some were not prepared.

Sometimes we also become tired while waiting for God.

We pray for healing, but the answer seems delayed.
We pray for financial breakthrough, but nothing changes.
We pray for our families, but problems continue.
We ask God for direction, but the road remains unclear.

The temptation is to give up.

But today’s Gospel tells us: Keep your oil. Keep your faith. Keep praying. Keep waiting.

God’s delay is not God’s absence.

❤️ Some Things Cannot Be Borrowed

The foolish virgins asked the wise ones for oil, but the wise could not give them enough.

This teaches us something profound: we cannot borrow someone else’s relationship with God.

Your parents’ faith cannot replace your own.
Your spouse’s prayers cannot replace your own.
Your friend’s relationship with Jesus cannot replace yours.

There comes a moment when each person must stand before God personally.

That is why we must build our own relationship with Christ today.

Do not wait until a crisis comes before you begin praying.

Do not wait until death approaches before you begin seeking God.

Do not wait until everything falls apart before you discover that God should have been at the center of your life.

🌙 The Bridegroom May Come at Midnight

The most striking part of the parable is that the bridegroom came at an unexpected hour.

Jesus concludes:

“Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

We do not know what tomorrow will bring.

Therefore, today’s Gospel invites us to live each day prepared—not with fear, but with faith and hope.

If today were your last day, would your heart be at peace with God?

If Jesus came tonight, would He find your lamp burning?

These are difficult questions, but they can lead us toward a deeper relationship with Christ.

🕯️ Keep the Fire of Faith Alive

Do not allow disappointment to extinguish your faith.

Do not allow suffering to extinguish your hope.

Do not allow someone’s betrayal to extinguish your love.

Do not allow sin to convince you that you cannot return to God.

Go back to prayer. Go back to confession. Go back to Scripture. Go back to the Eucharist. Go back to Jesus.

The door is still open.

The opportunity to prepare is now.

🙏 Prayer

Lord Jesus, keep the lamp of my faith burning.

When I become tired, give me strength.
When I become discouraged, give me hope.
When I fall into sin, lead me back to Your mercy.
When I become distracted by the world, turn my heart back toward You.

Lord, do not allow me to live carelessly while forgetting eternity.

Fill my heart with Your grace. Teach me to pray when I am happy and when I am hurting. Help me to remain faithful when Your answers seem delayed.

May I never wait until it is too late to seek You.

When the moment comes and You call me, may You find my lamp burning brightly with faith, love, and good works.

Jesus, prepare my heart for Your coming.

May I live each day ready to meet You.

Amen. 🙏❤️
