Feast Day: August 11
Patron Saint of: Television, embroiderers, goldsmiths, laundry workers, and those seeking protection from storms
Religious Order: Poor Clares
Saint Clare of Assisi was a woman of extraordinary faith, humility, courage, and love for Jesus Christ. Born into a wealthy Italian family, she could have lived a comfortable life surrounded by wealth and privilege. Instead, she chose to give everything to God and dedicate her life to prayer, poverty, and service.
Her friendship with Saint Francis of Assisi helped shape her vocation, and together they became powerful witnesses to the Gospel. Clare eventually founded the Order of Poor Ladies, now known as the Poor Clares, a religious community committed to prayer, poverty, and complete trust in God.
Her life continues to inspire Christians who desire to place Christ at the center of everything.
A Young Woman Who Longed for God
Saint Clare was born around 1194 in Assisi, Italy, into a noble and wealthy family. From her childhood, she demonstrated compassion toward the poor and a strong desire to live a life devoted to God.
Although her family expected her to marry and enjoy the privileges of her social position, Clare felt called to something different.
She wanted Christ.
Her heart was increasingly drawn toward prayer and the Gospel. She admired the radical way in which Saint Francis of Assisi had abandoned worldly wealth to follow Jesus.
Francis’s example helped Clare understand that true riches are not necessarily found in possessions. The greatest treasure is Christ Himself.
Clare Leaves Everything Behind
When Clare was about eighteen years old, she secretly left her family home on Palm Sunday night in 1212.
She went to meet Francis and his companions at the little church of San Damiano.
There, Clare renounced her worldly possessions and committed herself completely to Christ.
Francis cut her hair as a sign of her consecration, and Clare began her new life of poverty and prayer.
Her family was deeply opposed to her decision and attempted to bring her home. But Clare remained firm.
She had chosen Christ.
Eventually, other women joined her, including her sister Agnes. The community developed into the order that would become known as the Poor Clares.
A Life of Poverty and Prayer
Clare’s spirituality was deeply influenced by the Gospel and the example of Saint Francis.
She believed that following Jesus required more than simply admiring Him. It required surrender.
The Poor Clares embraced a life of poverty, prayer, fasting, and simplicity.
Clare herself refused to pursue wealth or comfort. She wanted her community to depend entirely upon God.
Her radical poverty was not a rejection of life. Rather, it was an expression of her profound trust in God.
She believed that when Christ is truly the center of our lives, we do not need worldly possessions to discover our worth.
Clare’s Courage and Leadership
Although Clare lived much of her life within the walls of the monastery, she was far from weak or passive.
She was a strong spiritual leader.
She defended the right of her community to live in poverty, even when powerful people encouraged the sisters to accept material security.
Clare understood that their poverty was part of their vocation.
Her determination eventually contributed to the approval of a rule for her community that allowed the sisters to maintain their commitment to poverty.
This made Clare an important figure in the development of women’s religious life in the Church.
The Miracle of the Eucharist
One of the most famous traditions associated with Saint Clare concerns her devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.
According to tradition, when Assisi was threatened by attackers, Clare carried the Blessed Sacrament and faced the danger with profound faith.
The attackers reportedly withdrew.
Whether considered through the historical traditions surrounding her life or through the devotional memory of the Church, the story reflects something central about Clare: her confidence was not in weapons, wealth, or human power, but in Christ.
For Clare, Jesus in the Eucharist was her strength.
Saint Clare and Saint Francis
Clare and Francis shared a deep spiritual friendship.
They were united by their love for Christ and their desire to live according to the Gospel.
Francis inspired Clare to pursue her vocation, while Clare became one of his closest spiritual companions.
Their relationship demonstrates that genuine Christian friendship can help people grow closer to God.
Neither sought personal glory.
Both wanted their lives to point toward Jesus.
Her Final Years
Clare spent many years at San Damiano, living a life of prayer and sacrifice.
Her health eventually became fragile, but her faith remained strong.
Even during her final illness, Clare continued to trust in God.
She died on August 11, 1253, surrounded by her sisters.
Only two years later, she was canonized by Pope Alexander IV in 1255.
The Church celebrates her feast every year on August 11.
What Saint Clare of Assisi Teaches Us Today
The life of Saint Clare remains relevant because many of the struggles she faced still exist today.
1. Choose Christ Above Material Possessions
Clare was born into wealth but discovered that possessions could never compare with the treasure of Christ.
Her life asks us an important question:
What occupies the highest place in our hearts?
Money, status, possessions, and recognition can disappear. But Christ remains.
2. Do Not Be Afraid to Follow God’s Call
Clare had to make a difficult decision. Her family had expectations for her life, but she believed God was calling her elsewhere.
Her courage reminds us that God’s plan may sometimes require us to step outside our comfort zones.
3. Prayer Is Powerful
Clare’s life was deeply rooted in prayer.
She teaches us that prayer is not something we turn to only when everything goes wrong. Prayer is a relationship with God that should shape our entire lives.
4. True Strength Comes From God
Clare’s life was characterized by humility, yet she demonstrated remarkable courage.
She shows us that humility does not mean weakness.
A person who completely trusts God can possess tremendous spiritual strength.
5. Simplicity Can Bring Us Closer to God
In a world that constantly encourages us to acquire more, Clare reminds us of the beauty of simplicity.
Sometimes we become so occupied with what we want that we forget what we already have.
Clare teaches us to recognize Christ as our greatest treasure.
Saint Clare’s Message for Our Modern World
Saint Clare lived more than eight centuries ago, but her message remains remarkably relevant.
We live in a world filled with noise, competition, materialism, anxiety, and the desire for recognition. Many people measure their value by what they own, how successful they appear, or how many people recognize them.
Clare offers another way.
Measure your life by your love for God.
She reminds us that we do not need to possess everything to be happy. We do not need to be famous to have purpose. We do not need worldly power to make a difference.
A heart completely surrendered to God can become a powerful witness to the world.
Saint Clare found her treasure in Christ.
And that treasure was enough.
