Pope Leo XIV’s New Prayer Intention for September 2026: For the Care of Water

Pope Leo XIV has invited Catholics and people of goodwill around the world to pray during September 2026 for the care of water, asking that this vital resource be managed justly and sustainably so that everyone can have equal access to it.

Water is more than a basic necessity of life. For Christians, it also carries a profound spiritual meaning: through water, we are reminded of Baptism, God’s grace, renewal, and new life in Christ. Pope Leo’s September prayer asks us to recognize water as a universal gift and to protect it with gratitude, justice, and responsibility.

A Call to Care for Our Common Home

The Pope’s intention comes during the Season of Creation, which begins on September 1, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, and continues until October 4, the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. This year’s theme focuses on “Living Water” and the growing challenges surrounding access to clean water.

Pope Leo reminds us that millions of people still lack safe drinking water, while some communities must travel long distances simply to find water. He therefore calls Christians not only to pray but also to take practical action—avoiding waste, preventing pollution, protecting rivers and water sources, and teaching younger generations to value the Earth’s resources.

Let Us Pray With Pope Leo XIV

Lord of Life,

Thank You for the gift of water, which gives life, refreshes the weary, nourishes the earth, and reminds us of Your grace.

Teach us to use this precious gift with gratitude, wisdom, justice, and responsibility. Forgive us when we waste or pollute what You have entrusted to us.

Remember all those who struggle to find clean and safe water. Bring relief to families, children, and communities affected by water scarcity.

Give us generous hearts that care for creation and defend the dignity of every person.

May our care for water become an expression of our love for You, our Creator, and our love for our brothers and sisters, especially the poor and vulnerable.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

This September, let us remember that every drop of water is a gift, every act of conservation is an act of responsibility, and caring for creation is part of caring for God’s children. 🙏💧🌍
