Born on 21 February 1937, King Harald V became King of Norway on 17 January 1991, following the death of his father, King Olav V. He served as Norway’s monarch for more than 35 years before his death on 28 August 2026, at the age of 89. His son succeeded him as King Haakon VIII.

Early Life of King Harald V

King Harald V was born on 21 February 1937 at Skaugum in Asker, Norway. He was the son of Crown Prince Olav, who later became King Olav V, and Crown Princess Märtha. His grandfather was King Haakon VII.

Harald’s birth was historically significant because he was the first Norwegian prince born in Norway in more than five centuries. His early childhood, however, was profoundly affected by the Second World War.

When Germany invaded Norway on 9 April 1940, the Norwegian Royal Family was forced to flee. Young Prince Harald travelled with his mother and sisters and eventually spent several years in the United States during the war.

The experience of exile and the struggle of the Norwegian people during the war became an important part of his understanding of national service and responsibility. In 1945, following Germany’s surrender, Prince Harald returned to Norway with his family.

King Harald V’s Education and Military Training

After returning to Norway, Prince Harald received an education designed to prepare him for his future responsibilities.

He then undertook military training, attending the Norwegian Cavalry Officers’ Training School and graduating from the Military Academy in 1959.

From 1960 to 1962, Prince Harald studied at Balliol College, University of Oxford, where he studied social science, history and economics.
