Gospel Reflection Matthew 9:9-13: Jesus Calls Us to Follow Him
“Follow me.”
Jesus saw Matthew sitting at the customs post. He saw a man whose past may have caused others to judge or reject him. Yet Jesus did not define Matthew by his mistakes, his profession, or his reputation.
Jesus simply looked at him and said, “Follow me.”
And Matthew got up.
This is the beautiful mercy of God: Jesus sees more in us than we sometimes see in ourselves. He knows our weaknesses, our failures, our regrets, and the things we wish we could change. Yet He still calls us.
Maybe today you feel unworthy of God’s love because of something you have done. Maybe you have fallen many times. Maybe people remember your past and refuse to believe you can change.
But Jesus is not standing before you to condemn you.
He is calling you.
“Follow me.”
Following Jesus does not mean that we have everything figured out. It means having the courage to leave behind what keeps us from Him and take the next step with faith.
Jesus also says:
“I desire mercy, not sacrifice.”
God is not looking for a perfect person. He is looking for a heart willing to return to Him.
If you have fallen, come back.
If you are tired, come to Him.
If you feel unworthy, come anyway.
If you have wandered far from God, His invitation is still there.
The same Jesus who called Matthew is still calling people today.
❤️ A Message of Hope
Never believe that your past is greater than God’s mercy.
Jesus can take the chapter you are ashamed of and begin writing a new one. Your mistakes may be part of your story, but they do not have to be the end of your story.
Perhaps God’s word for you today is simply:
“Get up. Follow Me. I am not finished with you.”
🙏 Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for seeing me with mercy instead of condemnation. You know my past, my weaknesses, my struggles, and the things I hide from others. Yet You still call me to follow You.
Give me the courage to rise from my failures, leave behind what keeps me away from You, and begin again.
Heal my heart, forgive my sins, and teach me to show mercy to others as You have shown mercy to me.
Jesus, I choose to follow You. Lead me, change me, and never let me walk away from Your love. Amen. 🙏✝️
